Red Center Square

12 blocks each containing 12 -2.5" x 4.5" rectangles and 1-2.5" red square
This months' community service block has a red center square surrounded by 12 rectangles. I pulled the red from my stash and the rest from donated fabric. I have a box of donated fabric that I keep under my bed. My goal is to use all of this fabric on community service blocks and quilts. This month I made a dozen blocks. I like the blocks lined up the same direction, but flipping the blocks or placing them randomly gives it a different look. These fabrics don't all go together, but it reminds me of my early quilts, that were only made of fabric scraps leftover from clothes that were sewn from patterns. One of my first baby quilts was made from Holly Hobby fabrics and friends gave my children polyester quilts. Speaking of clothes, I'll be making a white satin dress with a salmon waist tie and a white dress with Swiss dotted fabric and a black lace overlay. I wonder if I'll use these fabrics in a quilt. Some quilts are literally works of art to be framed and they have bits of lace, satin, and silk in them.
I recently met a famous quilter, who cut up her wedding dress years ago and has been putting bits of it in her quilts ever since. I found an old baby quilt top, that I made years ago, but never completed. I will probably keep it, because it has some of the fabric, I used to make a dress for my mom. My mom's been gone for more than a decade, but this fabric was so her. I'll save it for another post. Happy Quilting!
