Dresses & Capes

2017 Paper Quilt
When you don't have time to sew, making a paper quilt lets everyone show off their style. It's fun for kids. Unfortunately this one had to be moved a few times and the tape is slipping.

Red Center Square

12 blocks each containing 12 -2.5" x 4.5" rectangles and 1-2.5" red square
This months' community service block has a red center square surrounded by 12 rectangles. I pulled the red from my stash and the rest from donated fabric. I have a box of donated fabric that I keep under my bed. My goal is to use all of this fabric on community service blocks and quilts. This month I made a dozen blocks. I like the blocks lined up the same direction, but flipping the blocks or placing them randomly gives it a different look. These fabrics don't all go together, but it reminds me of my early quilts, that were only made of fabric scraps leftover from clothes that were sewn from patterns. One of my first baby quilts was made from Holly Hobby fabrics and friends gave my children polyester quilts. Speaking of clothes, I'll be making a white satin dress with a salmon waist tie and a white dress with Swiss dotted fabric and a black lace overlay. I wonder if I'll use these fabrics in a quilt. Some quilts are literally works of art to be framed and they have bits of lace, satin, and silk in them.
I recently met a famous quilter, who cut up her wedding dress years ago and has been putting bits of it in her quilts ever since. I found an old baby quilt top, that I made years ago, but never completed. I will probably keep it, because it has some of the fabric, I used to make a dress for my mom. My mom's been gone for more than a decade, but this fabric was so her. I'll save it for another post. Happy Quilting!

Independence Day Quilt

I used red, white or beige, and blue to make this quilt. This quilt has 15 12" finished blocks, a modest beige print border, a slim navy binding, a red calico back, and a moda label. It was hand-tied with embroidery floss and the border was hand-stitched to finish it. It covers about half of a full size bed. It's meant to be a couch quilt or carry along. I almost made two quilts because the whites would look better without the beige and vise versa. I decided to stick with just one quilt because I'm not a perfectionist and I just wanted one quilt. This quilt is made up of pin wheels and stars. The 1st block is called "Square in a Star", the 2nd is one version of the traditional pinwheel, the 3rd is the "Ohio Star", the 4th is a pinwheel, the 5th is "Star of Hope", the 6th is a repeat of the 4th, the 7th is another pinwheel, the 8th is a traditional pinwheel called "Clay's Choice", the 9th is another pinwheel, the 10th is a star, the 11th is another star, the 12th is the "Ribbon Star", the 13th is a star, the 14th is "Star in a Star", and the 15th is the "Star Puzzle".

Community Service Blocks

Cut 1-8.5 "square and 20-2.5"squares to make these blocks
I belong to a quilt guild that makes quilt blocks every month for our community service quilts. Marianna, one of our members, has taken over the community service block of the month. She distributes some pre-cut blocks to members to sew, as well as, posting a pattern online for members to create additional blocks with their own fabric or with the guilds stash. The orange and blue Bear's Claw or Maple Leaf was distributed by Anna, who presided Marinna. I love how well the colors compliment each other. Marianna's blocks will probably go to children and teens, who are spending time in the hospital. We often make quilts for the elderly and babies and this gives us the opportunity to make fun quilts for children and teens. I think all these blocks would be great for teens.

Cut 1 ivory 4.5" x 8.5" rectangle & 1 ivory 4.5" square, cut 1 floral 4.5" x 8.5" rectangle, cut 1 dark pink 4.5" square, and cut 1 light pink 4.5" x 12.5" rectangle.
